Hello! My name is Kelli Harter and I'm a Junior Music Education Major at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas. My area of concentration is choral music although I play piano and flute as well. I am involved in the Women's Chorus as well as the Chamber Singers at WTAMU. I have been involved in music my entire life, and I am very excited about getting to teach what I love. Music is a gift. I am blessed to share it with students.
My teaching Philosophy is varied and open for expansion. I consider myself a very holistic teacher and hope to continue that practice throughout my teaching career. I do my best to accommodate all learning styles. It is very important for teachers to be able to realte to all students and since no two people are the same, being adaptable is a must in any classroom. Flexibility is also very important in a music classroom so having the ability to "read" your class and individual students is absolute. I find it essential for a student and teacher to develop a bond that involves trust and understanding. If your students don't trust you, or visa versa, learning will not occur as easily as in a classroom where trust has been developed. I try to focus more on the students and what they are achieving more than the stricter side of education. Especially in schools were the socio-economic status is low, it is important for us to relate to the kids as individuals rather than focus on the bureaucracy of education. In my opinion, the only way that lasting learning can take place is if bonds are developed and we as teachers relate to all our students in the educational sense of learning styles, as well as prior knowledge and personal understanding.
